Determinants

For a 2×2 matrix, $\det\begin{pmatrix} a & b \\ c & d \end{pmatrix} = ad - bc$. For larger matrices, expand along a row or column by cofactors, or (faster) use elimination: the determinant is the product of the pivots, adjusting sign for row swaps.
