HTH or HHT? It's Not 50/50

Two three-flip patterns with the same odds take different times to appear, and in a head-to-head race HHT beats HTH two times out of three.

What to remember

  • HHT and HTH each have probability 1/81/8 at any position, but the expected waits are 88 and 1010.
  • For a fair coin, E[T]E[T] adds 2k2^k for every kk where the first kk letters equal the last kk, so self-overlap slows a pattern down (HHH: 1414, HTH: 1010, HHT: 88).
  • In a race HHT beats HTH with probability 2/32/3; races depend on how the two patterns overlap each other.
  • Penney's game is non-transitive: against abcabc, reply with the opposite of bb followed by aa and bb, and you win at least 2/32/3 of the time.
  • The method for every pattern problem: write down the states of progress, condition on the next flip, and solve from the end (HHT: 8, 6, 2; HTH: 10, 8, 6).
