Linear Algebra

Lesson 3 of 11

Systems of Linear Equations

Ax = b, Gaussian elimination, and when solutions exist or are unique.

Ax = b, two readings

A linear system is compactly Ax=bA\mathbf{x} = \mathbf{b}. Row picture: each equation is a hyperplane; solutions are intersections. Column picture: we ask whether b\mathbf{b} is a linear combination of the columns of AA, i.e., whether b\mathbf{b} lies in the column space. The column picture is the one that generalizes (least squares, regression, factor models all live there).
