Counting Principles

If a task has $k$ stages with $n_1, n_2, \dots, n_k$ options each, the total number of ways is $n_1 n_2 \cdots n_k$. This single idea generates all of counting. License plates with 3 letters then 3 digits: $26^3 \cdot 10^3$.
